Noah Di Bettschen
Ruettimann Contemporary proudly supports young artists alongside their more established artist program. In the Emerging Artist Position, Ruettimann Contemporary currently features Noah Di Bettschen, a painter, writer, and video artist born in 2002 who is based in Zurich, Switzerland.
Noah Di Bettschen’s artistic practice involves creating large-scale acrylic paintings on canvas with expressive and surreal subject matters. They often entail messages and poems by the artist directly applied to the canvas. Writing poems and texts to explore his overwhelming emotions, ignited the painterly process in his late teens when he started to draw and paint in the small kitchen of his apartment.
Di Bettschen boldly faces the pain caused by the early loss of his drug-addicted father and seeks the cathartic effect of his creative process. It also helps him deal with the pain of not having a father as a point of reference in his adult life.
His paintings often feature portraits of him and his father or sceneries from alternate realities with these two characters. Yet, the artists now depicts his father knowing of his struggles, as opposed to his limited perspective when his was a child of only a few years, and incorporates this information in his portraits through various stylistic attributes.
Di Bettschen also paints portraits of social outsiders who struggle with substance abuse or the inability to adapt to a regular social framework. Di Bettschen’s goal is to show that each individual, no matter their circumstance, is seeking the respect and empathy of their fellowmen and an understanding for their hopes and dreams.
Noah Di Bettschen currently studies at F+F School for Art and Media Design Zurich. In the Spring of 2022, he was featured in an extensive solo show at Photobastei Zurich.
